What is a Blown Fuse?

An electrical fuse in the switchboard of your home is a safety device to protect against overloaded circuits when too many appliances are used at the same time.

Another more serious fault occurs when a live wire touches another live wire or metallic part of an appliance. This causes a short circuit and may result in an electrocution injury, or damage to your home from fire.

Electrical fuses to protect against these occurrences may be found in many different forms, ranging from a simple porcelain “plug-in” fuse, to more robust Residual Current Detectors otherwise known as RCD’s. These devices allow current to flow while everything is working normally. When a fault occurs, the flow of current is stopped until further action is taken.

A porcelain “plug-in” fuse, a low level protection device, comprises a very thin fuse wire connected between two terminals.

When an overload or short circuit fault occurs in an appliance or wiring circuit, enough heat is generated in the fuse wire to burn it through, preventing current flow until the fault is resolved and the fuse wire replaced

However, when a fault occurs, a plug-in fuse is slow to react taking time for the wire to burn through before protection is provided.In addition, most appliances operate at relatively high current flows, consequently the correct grade of fuse wire must be used.

Circuit breakers including many varieties of RCD’s are very rapid acting and much safer devices, providing greater protection for your family and your property. Being much more sensitive to changes in current flow caused by faulty circuits or appliances, such devices are able to react in milliseconds, much quicker than “plug-in” fuses and therefore provide greater protection.

Why did your Fuse Blow?

The main reason for a blown fuse is usually overloading a particular circuit when many appliances are operated at the same time, often on a “power board” or a multiple outlet adaptor on a single wall power point.

Another reason maybe if an appliance or power point outlet is subjected to moisture or water causing a short circuit. In this case, always turn off the power point and disconnect the appliance from the wall plug. If the fuse continues to “blow” or the circuit breaker needs to be reset again, call an Alliance Climate Control technician and request an emergency call out visit. Common causes of “blown fuses” or tripped circuit breakers are

Too many appliances used at the same time while connected to a single power outlet.
A fault in any appliance such as broken or exposed wires.
A broken or cracked housing in a wall or light switch, frequently a crackling sound is easily heard.
Water allowed to enter a wall mounted power point or perhaps dripping onto bare wires behind the wall.

How to prevent Blown Fuses

Blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers are usually caused by overloading a circuit with too many appliances and can often be seen as heat discolouration of the power point or power board. In such cases, relocate some appliances to a different circuit or reduce which appliances are used at the same time.

In some cases, a broken or damaged wired entering an appliance will be seen to spark or “blacken” the area around the faulty wire entry when they are used. If this occurs, immediately turn off the power point and disconnect the appliance, making sure not to reconnect it until it has been checked by a professional and repaired. Water and electrical power should never be combined and any chance of moisture entering an electrical power outlet should be avoided. All power points in wet areas such as the bathroom or kitchen should be positioned well away from surfaces where water might gather, also any moisture leaking from a pipe behind a wall could have catastrophic effect if dripping onto a power point. This is usually a rare circumstance but it is important to seek professional advice should this occur.
