What Is A VRV Air Conditioning System?
VRV air conditioning, short for variable refrigerant volume air conditioning, is a powerful HVAC system that uses inverter technology to send refrigerant to multiple, independently controlled indoor units from a single, highly efficient outdoor inverter compressor. This lets a VRV system powerfully and precisely cool different rooms at independent temperatures without needing ducting, making it extremely versatile on any property.
From residential homes to commercial buildings, offices and large apartment blocks, a VRV system provides efficient air conditioning at an affordable rate on any premises. Better yet, because of inverter technology, a VRV can modulate refrigerant flow based on real-time demand, instead of switching on and off constantly. This makes them more energy efficient and affordable than ducted air conditioning or similar systems.
Alliance Climate Control is one of the leading names in VRV air conditioning installations in Sydney. Our fully qualified team has the expertise to recommend and install a VRV solution tailored to your building’s needs, whether you need cooling for your business or your home.

We recommend booking an Alliance Eco-Clean Service at least every other year. That way, you can keep your system in top operating condition, especially during high heat loads in summer, or for consistent warm air in winter.
Maintenance
With regular maintenance, you can make sure your system operates at full capacity with minimal wear and tear all year round. By having your system checked at least once a year, we can catch small issues before they blossom into bigger problems that need repairs or replacement.
Your outside VRV unit should be regularly checked most of all, as it is more exposed to the elements. On top of avoiding repairs, regular maintenance by our expert team can help you:
- Extend your unit’s warranty
- Lower your overall energy costs
- Perform more reliably over the seasons
- Prevent future issues
- Reduce breakdowns
How Does
VRV Air Conditioning Work?
VRV works by taking refrigerant in a compressor and sending it up through a range of coils in the outdoor unit. The refrigerant is turned from a vapour into a liquid through these coils.
From there, the refrigerant is sent to an external unit, which is connected to each indoor unit. This external unit contains a gas/liquid separator. This is used to separate any liquid and gas remaining within the refrigerant so that it can then be subcooled.
This is done to ensure that when the refrigerant is sent to the various indoor units, the refrigerant is still 100% liquid once it goes through the thermal expansion device.
Once the refrigerant returns from the various indoor units, it comes back in a mostly vaporous form. As it returns through the external unit, it’s stored in an accumulator. This accumulator acts as both a storage system for the vaporous refrigerant and a buffer to ensure any refrigerant still in liquid form is kept aside and doesn’t damage the interior components of the outdoor unit. From there, the refrigerant is stored until it’s needed again.

What Is a
VRV Air Conditioning System?
VRV (or variable refrigerant volume) air conditioning system delivers just enough refrigerant to each connected indoor air conditioning unit to meet its cooling needs. Unlike other systems, a VRV system will detect when a room is no longer occupied and will stop sending that indoor unit refrigerant. As a result, this lowers its emissions and operating costs.
VRV air conditioning systems are large scale and can have up to sixty-four indoor units connected to just one outdoor unit, making them perfect for commercial buildings, offices and large apartment blocks. You can customise the location and layouts of the indoor units to best suit your location.
VRV air conditioning is one of the cheapest and most efficient ways to connect many indoor units to a single outdoor unit. This is why it is so popular among homes and businesses across Australia.
If this sounds like the custom air conditioning system you’ve been looking for, don’t keep waiting on it! Alliance Climate Control can install your custom VRV air conditioning system. Give us a call today to get the ball rolling.

What Are the Benefits of VRV
Air Conditioning?
VRV air conditioning is a sophisticated system that can run over fifty indoor air conditioning units from a single outdoor unit. But the sheer size of a VRV air conditioning system isn’t the only attractive feature of the system. Many benefits come with installing a VRV system in your offices, apartment block or commercial building.
Here are some of the key advantages of VRV air conditioning:
Automatic Comfort
A VRV air conditioning system will automatically adjust the interior temperature of each room to a comfortable level. If a room is too hot or cold, the system will use a tiny amount of energy to send enough refrigerant to that unit to maintain a comfortable temperature in that room.
Additionally, this feature will automatically reduce the humidity in the air. The way the system can automatically adjust so many rooms at once to maintain a comfortable level is one of the biggest selling points for a VRV air conditioning system.
Cooling and Heating Provided
Unlike other air conditioning systems, a VRV air conditioning system can provide cooling and heating options. This system will passively heat or cool each connected room until it’s at the predetermined, comfortable level. That means no matter how hot or cold it is outside, it’s always going to be perfect in each room.
Silent Air Flow
Because the primary motor of a VRV air conditioning system is outside, it’s almost completely silent; no more noises and vibrations coming from loud indoor units. A VRV system will keep your room cool without disturbing your work or your sleep.
Energy Efficient Design
A VRV air conditioning system runs at a lower capacity for longer amounts of time throughout the day, making it far more energy-efficient. As the system is already using hot or cold air to maintain a constant temperature, it’s using far less energy than other fans and air conditioners would. Not only does that make it far more energy-efficient, but it’s cheaper to run as well.
Is VRV Air Conditioning
Right for Me?
VRV air conditioning systems are a good fit for any property owner who wants precise but affordable temperature control of multiple rooms or areas without having to install a ducted system. From large, multi-storey luxury homes to office and retail stores, VRV air conditioning specialises in providing high comfort and low humidity environments.
If you want individualised temperature zones for each of your rooms, a VRV system is just the system you need. The pinpoint zoning combined with inverter technology lets you precisely manage the temperature of multiple units across your property using real-time modulation. Because your system isn’t constantly switching on and off, it consumes less energy, giving you more savings on your climate control.
Gain complete temperature control over your industrial building, large office or luxury home today. Give our experts at Alliance a call, and our team will determine if this system is right for you and walk you through your next steps.
From quality installations to routine maintenance, Alliance Climate Control offers durable, high-quality air conditioning solutions for you and your needs. Get in touch today!
Is VRV Better
Than Multi-Split System Air Conditioning?
VRV air conditioning is better than multi-split air conditioning in larger buildings with many rooms. VRV air conditioning works similarly to multi-split air conditioning. Both connect multiple indoor units to a single outdoor compressor. The first major difference between the two types is that VRV air conditioning is built for large-scale buildings like large offices and hospitals, while multi-split systems are more commonly found in large homes and small office blocks.
VRV air conditioning systems are also incredibly quiet, so you won’t be disturbed during function. In addition, it will be able to detect and determine heat loads in different rooms and adjust accordingly. That means no more accidentally sweltering rooms, you’ll have the perfect temperature in every room, every time.
The other difference is that a multi-split gives you greater control over the temperature in each room, while a VRV system works best to maintain a constant, comfortable temperature and humidity across multiple rooms. If you are looking for an air conditioning system for a large home, a multi-split system may be better, while a VRV system will be far more effective in a large office block
Is VRV Better Than
Ducted Air Conditioning?
VRV and ducted air conditioning are often compared because they both allow for independent cooling for each room it is connected to. However, there are marked differences between VRV and ducted air conditioning.
In most situations, VRV air conditioning is better than ducted air conditioning. Here at Alliance Climate Control, we have worked with both systems for decades and are confident in recommending VRV air conditioners to our clients.
VRV air conditioners can independently cool or heat rooms the same way ducted systems can, without the need for the ductwork itself. In addition, VRV systems can connect to different indoor units, making it far more flexible than traditional ducted systems. VRV air conditioning systems also have the ability to heat and cool at the same time, giving VRV owners unmatched customisation and flexibility with their indoor climate control.
As one of the leading names in VRV air conditioner installations, the team here at Alliance Climate Control are proud to provide efficient VRV cooling to homes across the state. We have decades of experience performing VRV air conditioner installations in Sydney, and we will have no trouble installing yours.

Why are VRV System Service & Repairs Necessary?
When scheduled regularly, VRV air conditioning service and repairs make sure your system is working at peak performance. This includes ensuring filtration mediums are free from dust or pollen that may result in unpleasant odours or adversely affect the health of occupants. Some common faults we regularly check for include:
- Incorrect operation of the digital expansion valve, which creates an inconsistent flow of refrigerant, resulting in occupant discomfort.
- Build-up of dust or pollen in the fan, coil or filters within the indoor unit or poor sealing at room entry grilles, allowing ingress of dust or conditioned air to escape.
- Low level of refrigerant gas. This may be perceived by occupants as inferior cooling efficiency and result in occupants selecting a lower temperature, which may cause compressor overload.
- Dust accumulation on fans or condenser coils, reducing the heat dissipation characteristics of the condenser system.
- Inaccurate load sensing of the compressor causing inefficient circulation of refrigerant gas.
