What is a Smoke Alarm?

Smoke alarms are required in every home in Australia by law to protect occupants from death or injury due to smoke inhalation or catastrophic fire, but there are so many things to consider, it’s no wonder the subject is so confusing.

Basically, two types of smoke alarms are commonly available, being Photoelectric and Ionisation alarms, other special purpose alarms are also sometimes used such as carbon monoxide alarms where gas combustion or an open hearth fire might introduce harmful fumes to the living space.

The main difference between Photoelectric and Ionisation alarms is that Photoelectric alarms can sense smoke from a smouldering fire, enabling early arousal of occupants and allow time to control the fire or escape if necessary, but they are poorly equipped to sense a well-established, flaming fire.

Ionisation alarms by contrast can identify the presence of a flaming fire effectively but they are less able to provide early warning of a smouldering fire or impending breathing or visibility difficulties caused by heavy smoke. Some alarms combine both types of sensing, however, ionisation sensors can be triggered by vapours produced by cooking or by steam so their location should be suitably distanced from the bathroom or kitchen or other location where food is cooked.

Other types of smoke alarms might include heat sensing alarms, particularly suitable to fires in the kitchen where cooking oil might catch fire or from other inadvertent ignition sources, however, fires of this origin are more likely to be noticed immediately ignition takes place and easier to control.

How can we help with your Smoke Alarm?

Smoke alarms are usually quite inexpensive and readily available from many outlets. The least expensive types require regular battery replacement, usually once every year, but all smoke alarms require attention of this frequency to keep them clean and insect free.

Some smoke alarms are provided with lithium long life batteries, lasting around 10 years, however, it is recommended to replace smoke alarms after this period of time so battery replacement is not an option.

Other smoke alarms may be wired in, therefore only requiring testing of the sensor and cleaning every year. In multiple alarm installations, they can all be configured to emit a warning sound when any of the alarms in the circuit are triggered. Some also have marker lights to guide occupants to safety where visibility is impaired due to heavy smoke.

I recently had the aircon in my unit upgraded from a 10+ year old ducted system to a new 16kw beast. From the first interaction with Alliance I could tell it is a professional, well oiled outfit.

The quote inspection was arranged promptly after sending my enquiry, and Liam Doyle came to inspect the apartment and make recommendations. He was very pleasant, attentive to the requirements and thorough. I appreciated his very professional interaction with me and his detailed explanation of how the system would work. He was very prompt in sending through the quote. Strata took some time to approve the implementation, and I received two follow-ups from the team in that time. Nothing pushy, I was pleased with the contact as I felt it was another indication of a good process behind the scenes. After receiving strata approval I asked Liam to come back to discuss some cosmetic changes to the internal layout and he was very obliging and once again very attentive and professional. He came over on his way home that same afternoon and had the updated quote to me two days later.

I subsequently dealt with Will Williams who was the scheduler assigned to the job. He was also very professional and gave me a run-down of the installation process, timings, and answered all my questions without hassle, and with a great attitude once again. He was able to schedule me in promptly within two weeks which was ideal for our timing.

I know its unusual to call out the accounts team, but I paid a deposit and two instalments through Eric Zhang who once again blew me away with his professionalism and prompt response. He was pleasant, efficient and cordial on the phone and issued formal receipts within minutes of payment going through.

Finally, the installation team blew me away. Our installers Garret, Shabi and Daniel H were all extremely professional and took great care to tidy up after themselves and ensure everything was left in good order over the three days they took to install. I cannot speak highly enough of the excellent job they did with the installation. Nothing was too difficult, they made a number of suggestions that added to their workload but would be more aesthetically pleasing and had absolutely no issues answering questions or making changes as the install went along. Honestly a dream crew.

Lastly, we wrapped up the installation with Harry the plasterer, and the painters whose names I didnt catch. Once again all extremely professional, pleasant individuals that I was very comfortable with, and nothing was too much trouble. Harry in particular was especially helpful, and encountered the inevitable issue of uneven concrete slabs and walls not at right angles but promptly found solutions without letting these issues cause either concern, or delays. Harry was truly excellent and did an amazing job on a relatively difficult site.

Thank you Alliance team, you should be very proud of the work you all do, I could not be happier and have been singing your praises to everyone I know. I almost wish I had more aircon to install so I can engage you again!

Three years on from the initial airconditioner installation and upgrading our external electrical board, I again needed Alliance to fix some old wiring inside the house and look at the air conditioner unit that had stopped working. Again, their service was great. The issues were tricky to fix, but I cannot fault their service. It was friendly, attentive and competent. Even more impressive was the follow-up of the technicians very early the next morning to make sure the air conditioner problem was fixed - and when it wasn't, they were straight back. Thank you to all who attended over those few weeks, including - Vishal, Andre, Christian, Peter, Steve, and young Andre. How to maintain your smoke alarms

Once your smoke alarms are installed, it’s an easy matter to simply forget them but you need to make sure they are ready to protect you and your family if a fire does happen while you are asleep. Consequently, no matter which type you select to install, it’s important to not only replace the battery every year, if applicable, but also to test its function every 3 months or as often as you please.

Perhaps you have installed the type where a torch beam will be enough to test the alarm, maybe the smoke alarm is accessible enough to reach with a broom handle or extension arm. However, for annual inspection and maintenance, the smoke alarm should be opened and cleaned to remove any dust or insects that might have built up.
