What are Surge protectors?

Surge protectors, provide a different level of protection to circuit breakers or residual current devices. They are designed to keep digital equipment safe from harmful voltage deviations such as might be experienced during lightning strikes, etc. However, less severe but damaging voltage drops, can still occur without notice often resulting from power transmission circumstances beyond your property.

A surge protector offers protection against momentary power deviations, typically characterised by lightning or other extreme weather events. They offer no protection against any following loss of power with the resultant problems of lost computer files or damage sustained on other devices.

It provides the same protection as a typical surge protector, while also providing back-up in the form of battery storage and is able to sustain power for a limited time.

Surge protectors and UPS devices are both available to protect specific power circuits and digital equipment connected that power outlet. However, surge protection fitted at the main switchboard can protect all circuits and devices connected within the entire house.

An Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) provided with a battery backup, ideally provides up to 15 minutes of power, usually sufficient to safely shutdown any computer or other equipment at risk. If a battery with a longer back up period is needed, it’s important to look at what devices will be supported and how long the battery will need to support those devices. This is quite a complex evaluation, requiring the knowledge of a trained electrician. When our apartment’s 12-year old Daikin air-conditioning system broke down, we called a few A/C companies, including Alliance Climate Control (ACC). We were immediately impressed by ACC’s professionalism, promptness and very friendly office staff and service technicians. Shazin and Brandon did an excellent job diagnosing the system’s problems and providing a range of options as to its repair and on-going guarantee conditions. Once contracted, Yunis, Nico and their colleague (whose name, regrettably, I have misplaced), took great care in replacing the larger components on the building’s roof and replacing the five individual control panels in our apartment. Not a trivial job, given the roof accessibility in our building. Conner and Steven worked hard on a following, very hot day to diagnose and correct a tricky leak in the coolant pipe on the roof that runs to the apartment. With the pipe sealed, they commissioned and tested the system thoroughly. ACC kept us well informed throughout the entire process. We are very happy with ACC and have no hesitation in recommending them!

The service was fast, clean, and extremely professional from start to finish.

Yunus, arrived ahead of the shop opening, took the time to understand our needs, and recommended a unit that was perfectly suited to the space. His colleague Gokhan was also incredibly helpful throughout the installation.

How to maintain your
Surge Protector

Once you have identified suitable surge protection, presumably one with a visible light indicating the surge protection feature is still enabled and working, it is important to check this status regularly, perhaps at monthly intervals, to ensure your devices are always protected.

Additionally, it is always worthy of note that if a single outlet power board is selected, the surge protector is not overloaded with several high current usage devices connected at the same time. Generally, surge protection is only required for digitally operated equipment and these generally operate with low power consumption.
