What are Surge protectors?

Surge protectors, provide a different level of protection to circuit breakers or residual current devices. They are designed to keep digital equipment safe from harmful voltage deviations such as might be experienced during lightning strikes, etc. However, less severe but damaging voltage drops, can still occur without notice often resulting from power transmission circumstances beyond your property.

A surge protector offers protection against momentary power deviations, typically characterised by lightning or other extreme weather events. They offer no protection against any following loss of power with the resultant problems of lost computer files or damage sustained on other devices.

It provides the same protection as a typical surge protector, while also providing back-up in the form of battery storage and is able to sustain power for a limited time.

Surge protectors and UPS devices are both available to protect specific power circuits and digital equipment connected that power outlet. However, surge protection fitted at the main switchboard can protect all circuits and devices connected within the entire house.

Surge protection should always be considered where sensitive digital equipment is being used. Not only are repairs caused by power fluctuation often expensive, the inconvenience of being unable to use that device for an extended period, can interrupt our daily lives noticeably.

An Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) provided with a battery backup, ideally provides up to 15 minutes of power, usually sufficient to safely shutdown any computer or other equipment at risk. If a battery with a longer back up period is needed, it’s important to look at what devices will be supported and how long the battery will need to support those devices. This is quite a complex evaluation, requiring the knowledge of a trained electrician. Split system air conditioning installed by Alliance. Great non-intrusive design initiated by installers. Ie, the cabling was put under the upper floor and then into an existing air vent, then out under the eaves and down behind existing drain pipe, causing minimal visual impact.

They were excellent pointing out the incorrcect filter mesh was used on initial installation allowing a considerable amount of dust passing through the return air grill and highly suggested we replace this with a more appropriate filter media. Alliance CC runs a streamlined service from first planning to installation. Our installation manager Goran was very accomodating as we worked through a prolonged strata approval process. The installation itself was efficient with several workers onsite under careful supervision by Sam. A couple of minor issues noticed after installation was complete were quickly rectified within 48 hours. We now have a flexible and economic system with internal Daikin units in 4 rooms suppled by 2 external Multi Inverters. Our only hesitation with this whole process was the trunking required externally, which is an unfortunate but unavoidable compromise to having the luxury of airconditioning.

New installation completed 20/02/26: Given our previous positive experience using Alliance CC we used them again to install ducted AC in our new house. Similarly smooth process and commitment to great customer service. James who quoted was very thorough taking time to walk us through the options and approachable in answering our further questions in the lead up. How to maintain your
Surge Protector

Once you have identified suitable surge protection, presumably one with a visible light indicating the surge protection feature is still enabled and working, it is important to check this status regularly, perhaps at monthly intervals, to ensure your devices are always protected.

Additionally, it is always worthy of note that if a single outlet power board is selected, the surge protector is not overloaded with several high current usage devices connected at the same time. Generally, surge protection is only required for digitally operated equipment and these generally operate with low power consumption.
