What are Surge protectors?

Surge protectors, provide a different level of protection to circuit breakers or residual current devices. They are designed to keep digital equipment safe from harmful voltage deviations such as might be experienced during lightning strikes, etc. However, less severe but damaging voltage drops, can still occur without notice often resulting from power transmission circumstances beyond your property.

A surge protector offers protection against momentary power deviations, typically characterised by lightning or other extreme weather events. They offer no protection against any following loss of power with the resultant problems of lost computer files or damage sustained on other devices.

It provides the same protection as a typical surge protector, while also providing back-up in the form of battery storage and is able to sustain power for a limited time.

Surge protectors and UPS devices are both available to protect specific power circuits and digital equipment connected that power outlet. However, surge protection fitted at the main switchboard can protect all circuits and devices connected within the entire house.

Surge protection should always be considered where sensitive digital equipment is being used. Not only are repairs caused by power fluctuation often expensive, the inconvenience of being unable to use that device for an extended period, can interrupt our daily lives noticeably.

An Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) provided with a battery backup, ideally provides up to 15 minutes of power, usually sufficient to safely shutdown any computer or other equipment at risk. If a battery with a longer back up period is needed, it’s important to look at what devices will be supported and how long the battery will need to support those devices. This is quite a complex evaluation, requiring the knowledge of a trained electrician. I had a split air con unit installed in my apartment by Alliance last week. Yunun and his team did a fantastic job from start to finish. They were friendly, professional and ensured that the unit, compressor, cabling and ducting was installed neatly and blended in with the surroundings. They left my apartment in showroom condition after they finished! I couldn't be happier. Highly recommended.

Andre G came out to complete the annual maintenance on my aircon under job #105771, which Alliance installed last year. The unit was particularly dusty inside, and Andre carried out a thorough service and deep clean. He was professional, meticulous, and explained each step clearly in advance. Very good experience with Alliance Climate Control.

Ivan led the team with Mosa, Zac and electrician Mohamed. Two split units installed and condenser placed neatly at the back.

Process was smooth from start to finish. Clear quote, easy scheduling, no surprises. They arrived at 7:15am and finished by 3pm.

Old heritage terrace, not an easy job. They adapted on site and improved a couple of original decisions. Final result is better because of that.

Workmanship is clean. Conduits through the roof cavity are tidy, indoor units fit well above the windows, and the outdoor unit is discreet.

Ivan communicated clearly throughout and set everything up on our phones at the end.

Their knowledge and service lead to an install that was a day shorter and significantly cheaper than quoted. This was completely unexpected after another local company couldn't be bothered to tell me my project was beyond their skill level and ghosted me without providing a quote.

How to maintain your
Surge Protector

Once you have identified suitable surge protection, presumably one with a visible light indicating the surge protection feature is still enabled and working, it is important to check this status regularly, perhaps at monthly intervals, to ensure your devices are always protected.

Additionally, it is always worthy of note that if a single outlet power board is selected, the surge protector is not overloaded with several high current usage devices connected at the same time.
