A safety switch, often known as a Residual Current Device (RCD) is a device designed to prevent electrical shock when a short circuit or other fault exists within the circuit.

The importance of a Safety Switch…

A safety switch has the capacity to turn off electricity within milliseconds of a fault to safeguard you, your family and your home from a serious electric shock.

However, safety switches can only protect you when they are in optimum working order and are correctly connected to a faulty circuit in question.

That’s why it is imperative you have safety switches connected to not just one, but all the circuits in your home. These include, but not limited to; Power Points, Lighting, Air-Conditioning, Kitchen Appliances, Hot Water and more, even if they are on separate tariffs.

When safety switches are correctly installed by a licensed and accredited Master Electrician, you need to ensure you test the functionality of them every three months, safeguarding your home properly and ensuring you are well protected from unexpected electric shocks.

The difference between a Safety Switch and a Circuit Breaker?

More so than not, people are perplexed by the difference of a safety switch, circuit breakers and fuses. And quite often, people deem them as being the same thing, or doing the same job. Simply put it, they are not, and there are importance differences between them.

Safety switches protect you from electric shock. When a current leak is identified, safety switches turn off the electricity within milliseconds. Usually, this occurs when a faulty power point, jammed wiring or electrical appliance is in use.

When it comes to protecting the circuitry, this is where circuit breakers and fuses come in. When electrical wiring is jammed or has too much current flowing through it, they have the ability to cut the power, protecting you from a potential household fire. When there is a surge or lightning strike, excessive current builds up, overheating electrical appliances and wiring. This can turn hazardous in the matter of seconds, as when there is excessive current, household fires are at high risk.

Circuit breakers and fuses do not protect people directly, only safety switches save lives. The easiest way to identify whether you have safety switches installed is to check your switchboard and speak to one of our Alliance Master Electricians.

How to Maintain your Safety Switches?

Quite often, after Safety Switches are installed in switchboards, we easily forget that they are there. However, the key rule to safety is preventative maintenance, an invaluable asset when it comes to electrical safety and safeguarding your home and families lives from harm.

For safety switches and circuit breakers to perform, it is imperative they are kept clean and free from moisture. Therefore, Alliance recommends you check the meter box where they are installed on a monthly basis and ensure the door is always kept closed, minimising derbies entering.

Safety switches are not an ‘install and forget about’ household item. To ensure they are in working order, they need to be manually reset or tripped every six months making sure they have the ability to provide protection when required.

For added safety, an Alliance tip is to use the occasion to manually trip each circuit breaker as well to make sure they are also functioning properly.

Tech was nice polite guy but he did not have the correct filters and wanted to cut some down to fit .. this does not work as cut down filters do not hold their shape so I told the guy not to replace them this time although the cut downs ones that were installed last year were quite clean, they were not in good shape.
Update: the company apologised for not having the correct filters at the time and promptly arranged for the correct units to be installed .. they really do follow up and fix any issue so deserve 5 Stars

We had our split system air-conditioning installed almost two years ago now (April 2024) and I have been meaning to write a review, because we were really happy with the service and installation, and I have only just got around to it. But that may be good, as I can say that the system works perfectly, and we have had not problems.

We have an inner city terrace, and have over more than a decade got quotes, only to be told that "it is not possible". So, I looked for someone close, who I figured would have experience with our type of dwelling. The quote was very reasonable, the installation went smoothly, and we are very happy.

The team have just left after installing 2 split systems so this is a very early review, but very happy with the service so far. Errol initially gave a quote and took the time to go through several budget and design options and explain everything in detail, he was great! Installation happened very fast, booked in a week after acceptance of quote. BJ and James were here today and did an amazing job, being sensitive to the fact I had a full day of meetings trying to work from home, consulting with me around this. A lot of furniture and equipment had to be moved to facilitate access and they even went to the extent of moving things back to the exact place they had been, even plugging other electrical equipment back in and vaccuuming. They explained the workings with me afterwards and how to maintain, and left the place spotless. The air con is working perfectly at the moment, completely as described. Also would like to call out Eric who did some behind the scenes work. Great service all round so far! Would recommend highly!
